Special Speaker: Emily Shupert (5/16/2010)

Following are notes from Emily Shupert, who spoke in Common Ground yesterday. She said a number of things our singles group appreciated and connected with. It was especially exciting to see a number of them dialogue with her afterward. Even today, I have had singles call me asking how to contact her.

Let me share with you two things I wrote down from her talk:

1. What is an idol?

• History: From many gods to one God

• • Abraham
  • 10 Commandments (Exodus 20:3)
  • Their problem with blending gods/God (Joshua 23:7)

• Today:
  • Our “sacrificing”
  • Romans 1:25-27
  • Our problem with blending gods/God

2. Discovering functioning idols in our lives:

• Examples:
  • “You complete me”
  • Business Deal
  • Spiritual Hero
  • More examples:
    • Peer approval: If they don’t respect or like me, who am I?
    • Appearances: My dress size equals my worth
    • Finances: My financial portfolio defines my worth
    • Intellect: My brainpower makes me more worthy

3. Letting go of idols:

• Expose the Idol

• Replace and Rejoice: Colossians 3:1-5
