Four Teaching Essentials to Change Lives
1-12-2012

“When day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place; and the crowds were searching for Him, and came to Him and tried to keep Him from going away from them. But He said to them, ‘I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose.’ So He kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.” (Luke 4:43-44)

We are teaching not only to inform but to be transformed (Romans 12:1-2).

Four essential parts of a life-changing Bible lesson:

1. Hook - The hook is a way to grab the attention of your students.
• Effective hooks are brief and interesting.
• The focus of your lesson is the Bible (no need for a 45 minute hook).
• Ex. Testimony, Video, Article, Humor, In the News, Focused

2. Book - The book is the “meat” of your message and explanation of the Bible.

• You are not called upon to be Dr. Charles Stanley.
• Avail yourself to sound Biblical resources that can add spiritual “meat”.

3. Look – The look is applying the Bible to your students’ daily lives.

Looks are practical points your students can do today to be doers of the word (James 1:22).

Ex. Home, Job, Friendship, Nation, Church, Events, Facebook

Ex. Handling trials God’s way
James 1:1-12

1. Find joy in adversity (James 1:1-4)
2. Ask God for wisdom (James 1:5-8)
3. Persevere for the prize (James 1:9-12)

4. Took – The took is giving your students an assignment or spiritual growth work.

An ineffective took: “Well, I hope someone learned something today. See you next Sunday.”

An effective took: “Wake up Monday morning and choose joy. Think about your most difficult trial and ask God for His wisdom first thing in the morning, during your lunch break, and at night before you walk in the front door.”

We are teaching the Bible not only to inform but to be transformed (Romans 12:1-2).
